The <strong>NYC Department of Education<\/strong> blocked ChatGPT, a generative text engine, on school devices and networks only last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason given for this decision was a:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cNegative impact on student learning\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concerns regarding \u201cthe safety and accuracy of content\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ny.chalkbeat.org\/2023\/1\/3\/23537987\/nyc-schools-ban-chatgpt-writing-artificial-intelligence#:~:text=The%20chatbot's%20ability%20to%20churn,could%20encourage%20cheating%20and%20plagiarism.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read more about these decisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assessing the Validity of Concerns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst some of these concerns are valid within the realms of education, others are less so. Some have suggested that being concerned over generative AI\u2019s production of accurate content is <strong>similar to being concerned that your calculator isn\u2019t able to write a sci-fi novel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Augmenting_Not_Replacing_AutogenAIs_Approach\"><\/span>Augmenting, Not Replacing: AutogenAI\u2019s Approach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AutogenAI\u2019s approach to generative AI is that it should be <strong>augmented<\/strong> \u2013 this is incredible technology, built to <strong>work with users<\/strong>, rather than instead of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the education system, <strong>Washington University<\/strong> has exemplified this philosophy (see photo below). The <strong>progressive ideas<\/strong> presented by WashU should be followed by other educational institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative AI is the future, and <strong>guiding young adults<\/strong> on the strengths and weaknesses of this technology \u2013 including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its most prominent applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information on its downfalls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 will only add to its development and application worldwide, rather than simply delaying the inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Future_of_Essays_in_an_AI-Enabled_World\"><\/span>The Future of Essays in an AI-Enabled World<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is articulated wonderfully by <strong>Nancy W. Gleason<\/strong>, Director of the Hilary Ballon Center for Teaching and Learning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"styles_paragraph__BUdL_\">\u201cSome claim the essay is dead. I disagree. Humans plus technology are the way forward. As educators, we have to teach our students what that means in practice.
