Behind the Build: Why Transparency Matters in AI

How Does AI Work in Proposal Writing?

By Archie Rowberry, Technical Prompt Engineer at AutogenAI

Imagine you’re driving a car but aren’t sure if the brakes work. That’s what it feels like to use AI without understanding how or why it makes certain decisions.
Understanding a model’s response is important, especially as AI is used more in areas like healthcare, finance, and public safety.

Why Transparency Matters

Trust isn’t built in secrecy

There’s a clear incentive for companies to keep details about their systems private. In sectors like finance, healthcare, and public services, deploying AI without understanding its internal logic is risky.

Performance and understanding go hand in hand

It’s not enough to know a model gives the right answer. You also need to know it didn’t get there by accident or by shortcutting its own reasoning.

How Can We Learn About LLM Behavior

Understanding how large language models respond is an active area of research and a part of making these systems more transparent.
By testing a wide range of inputs and prompts, researchers can start to see what influences the output.

Here’s an example from Anthropic’s latest research:

• Model behavior: Anthropic looked closely at what happens inside their models when given specific types of questions.

• Monitoring “neural activity”: They tracked how different parts of the model respond, like an MRI for AI.

• Uncovering patterns: This helped identify moments when the model took logical shortcuts, producing answers that may seem correct, but weren’t based on a complete or reliable process.

What it means for the future

As AI becomes part of more critical systems, visibility won’t be optional, it’ll be a new standard. Understanding how a model makes decisions will be as routine as debugging software, and just as important for building tools people can rely on.
