What Is AI? 

Mathematician Alan Turing was a pioneer in AI research. In the 1950s, he developed the Turning Test, a method to determine if computers could exhibit human-like, intelligent behavior. His test involved giving a human and a computer identical prompt and comparing the responses. If the responses were the same, the computer possessed “artificial intelligence.” 

Today, AI is its own field within computer science and focuses on creating systems that perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence. AI systems mirror human learning paths, enabling them to adapt to new information and situations and become more efficient over time. 

 

What Can AI Do?  

The introduction of AI technologies into the workplace means organizations of all sizes can benefit from it. There are three categories of AI:

Within the field of narrow AI, several subcategories define how AI works and the tasks it can accomplish. Some of these subcategories are described in the following sections. 

 

Machine Learning 

Machine learning (ML) is a type of AI that uses neural networks, which mimic human brain functions, to process large volumes of data and learn from them. These networks typically have a three- or four-layer structure: An input layer, one or two hidden layers where the processing happens, and an output layer. These networks primarily perform supervised learning, which requires data to be organized or labeled by humans. This allows the system to learn and make predictions based on known examples.  

For example, a simple application of machine learning can be seen in email filtering systems. These systems are trained to identify and filter out spam emails by using a large volume of pre-labeled data, where emails are labeled as “spam” or “not spam”. The input layer of the neural network takes in various characteristics of an email, such as the subject line, sender, or certain keywords. The hidden layers process this information, and the output layer determines whether the email is spam or not. Over time, the system learns from this data and improves its accuracy in predicting and filtering out spam emails. 

 

Deep Learning 

Deep learning is a specialized version of ML that uses more complex neural networks called “deep neural networks.” These networks also have input and output layers but include many hidden layers—sometimes hundreds. This structure allows deep learning systems to perform unsupervised learning, meaning they can learn from data that hasn’t been labeled or structured by humans. Instead, these systems can identify patterns and features present in massive, unorganized datasets. 

For example, Google’s DeepMind developed an AI program called AlphaGo that used deep learning to master the complex board game, Go. The program learned the game through thousands of matches against itself, improving with each iteration. It eventually became so efficient that it was able to defeat the world champion, a feat previously thought impossible for an AI. This is an example of deep learning’s ability to identify patterns and strategies from massive, unorganized datasets without any human intervention 

 

Natural Language Processing 

Natural language processing (NLP) focuses on the interaction between computers and ordinary human language. This technology involves programming computers to process and analyze large amounts of natural language data so they can understand, interpret, and respond to human language with human-like text. 

For example, when customer service chatbots interact with customers on company websites or through social media, they use NLP. It enables them to understand and respond to customer inquiries in a natural, conversational manner. This improves the customer experience by providing immediate responses to questions or concerns in a familiar and unintimidating manner. It also saves the business time and resources by streamlining operations. 

 

Large Language Models 

Large language models (LLMs) are AI systems trained on large amounts of text, and they use deep learning to perform language-related tasks. LLMs can create human-like replies, including suggestions, based on the context of the questions they are asked. LLMs are used in language processing applications, such as text generation and translation services. 

For instance, Google’s BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is a prime example of an LLM. It is capable of understanding the context of a sentence by reading and processing text in both directions, and it’s extensively used in Google Search to improve the understanding and relevance of search results. 

 

Computer Vision 

Computer vision (CV) uses deep learning to train computers to understand and interpret visual data, like pictures or live video. It is frequently used to identify and categorize objects, monitor scenes, and perform other image-related tasks. For example, self-driving cars use CV to see obstacles and avoid them.  

Generative AI 

Generative AI (GenAI) is a new concept in the field of AI and takes the AI capabilities described above a step further. GenAI refers to a class of AI models that are trained on large sets of existing data and can produce new content on request. The new content—text, audio, images, or videos, for example—mimics the original data in style and features, but is a unique creation.
